Professional Biography
Judge Maritza Dominguez Braswell is a United States Magistrate Judge in the District of Colorado. At the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, she teaches Reimagining Justice: AI, Disruption, and the Future Legal Leader. The course combines AI literacy and legal design thinking with a hands-on design sprint, giving students an opportunity to develop and test ideas for improving the justice system. Students leave better equipped to think critically about AI, put its tools to work in legal settings, and lead as the profession integrates them.
Alongside her judicial duties, Judge Dominguez Braswell has become a national voice on the growing role of artificial intelligence in courts and legal institutions. She co-chairs the District of Colorado’s AI Committee and co-founded the Judicial AI Consortium (JAIC), a judges-only forum with more than 400 members that supports candid discussion across jurisdictions. She serves as a judicial advisor to The Sedona Conference’s Working Group 13 Steering Committee, which focuses on AI, and is a member of the ABA Science & Technology Law Section. She writes regularly about AI and justice, authors The AI Brief for judges and court professionals, and speaks to judicial and legal audiences around the country about responsible AI use.
Before joining the bench, Judge Dominguez Braswell practiced complex commercial litigation, co-founded a tech-forward law firm, and led the Civil Litigation and Employment department at the Colorado Attorney General’s Office. Her teaching draws on that experience to help students examine how technology changes legal work and the judgment required to lead through those changes.
