ESL Testing Policies, Procedures & Registration

Policies & Procedures for ESL Testing Arrangements

It is your responsibility to complete the exam registration form below, acknowledging you have read the following policies and procedures.

Additional testing time is not available for ESL students in JD programs.

Additional Time for Students Whose Primary Language is not English

Non-JD students whose primary language is not English may request additional time to complete their exams.  If approved for additional time, students will receive 20 minutes per hour of the exam, for any exam 5 hours or less.  Additional time is only approved for the first and second semesters of study at Denver Law.

Students will be approved for additional time if they do not have a degree from an English-speaking institution or have lived and/or worked in the US less than 2 years.  Students who have circumstances that made it difficult to learn English despite having earned a degree in an English-speaking country or having lived or worked in the US for more than 2 years, may complete the request form and describe their circumstances.

Before the Exam

  1. Students must submit an ESL Student Registration form.
  2. You will receive a response from the Office of Student Affairs after completing the ESL Student Registration form.
  3. Students should download the Exam 4 software and take a practice exam prior to arriving for the actual exam.
  4. The Student Affairs office will be in touch with each student about the date, time and location of exams at least 72 hours in advance. Please note that ESL exams are always on the same date.
  5. If the professor changes any details about the exam, please alert the Registrar’s office.

Day of the Exam

  5. The Registrar/proctor may provide disposable ear plugs to students upon request. Headphones may not be used without prior approval.

Materials in the Testing Room
  1. Students may only bring in materials that have been pre-approved by instructors. Proctors may require proof of approval for open books/notes or computer use.

  2. Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed in the testing room.

  3. Food and drinks are allowed in the testing room, provided they do not disrupt other students.
