On November 19, 2022, Anderson Lee Aldrich murdered five people, injured nineteen, and attempted to murder twenty-six more in a willful, deliberate, malicious, and premediated attack at Club Q in Colorado Springs. Aldrich later pled guilty in federal court to 74 hate crimes and firearms charges, admitting that this attack was in part motivated because of the actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity of the victims. Denver District Court Judge Jon Olafson will lead a conversation with the federal prosecutors in charge of the case, Alison Connaughty and Bryan Fields, about the reasons for and challenges surrounding the prosecution of this case as a hate crime.
