The Ved Nanda Center is honored to host Professor Shreya Atrey for a talk on her book Anti-Racism as a Legal Principle (Oxford University Press 2026).
Professor Atrey will present her new monograph Anti-Racism as a Legal Principle (OUP 2026). Anti-Racism as a Legal Principle shows that the law on racial discrimination represents a liberal model of anti-racism which does not address racism in a structural sense. In fact, there is no general legal principle of anti-racism in the UK or elsewhere in comparative (Canada, India, South Africa) and international law. In response, the book contributes to defining, locating and realising a general principle of anti-racism in public law.
Shreya Atrey is an Associate Professor in International Human Rights Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford. Shreya is the Editor-in-Chief of the Human Rights Law Review (OUP). Shreya works across equality and human rights issues in comparative and international law. Her first monograph, Intersectional Discrimination (OUP 2019) won the runners-up Peter Birks Book Prize in 2020. The monograph has been cited by the South African Constitutional Court in Mahlangu v Minister of Labour and Others [2020] ZACC 24 (19 November 2020) and the Supreme Court of India in Patan Jamal Vali v State of Andhra Pradesh Criminal Appeal No 452 of 2021 (27 April 2021).
