The Ved Nanda Center is honored to host Professor Shreya Atrey for a talk on her book Anti-Racism as a Legal Principle \;(Oxford University Press 2026). \;
Professor Atrey will present her new monograph Anti-Racism as a Legal Principle \;(OUP 2026). Anti-Racism as a Legal Principle \;shows that the law on racial discrimination represents a liberal model of anti-racism which does not address racism in a structural sense. In fact\, there is no general legal principle of anti-racism in the UK or elsewhere in comparative (Canada\, India\, South Africa) and international law. In response\, the book contributes to defining\, locating and realising a general principle of anti-racism in public law.
Shreya Atrey is an Associate Professor in International Human Rights Law at the Faculty of Law\, University of Oxford. Shreya is the Editor-in-Chief of the Human Rights Law Review \;(OUP). Shreya works across equality and human rights issues in comparative and international law. Her first monograph\, Intersectional Discrimination \;(OUP 2019) won the runners-up Peter Birks Book Prize in 2020. The monograph has been cited by the South African Constitutional Court in Mahlangu v Minister of Labour and Others \;[2020] ZACC 24 (19 November 2020) and the Supreme Court of India in Patan Jamal Vali v State of Andhra Pradesh \;Criminal Appeal No 452 of 2021 (27 April 2021).
