Many students wanting to enjoy a different pace while still earning progress towards graduation enroll in summer semester. Whether earning credit in an externship placement or attending an on-campus course like Evidence, summer semester offers a way to continue your studies in a more connected way than fall or spring semester. Aid is available for most students enrolled half-time or more, but often requires additional steps. Read on below for more information.
Students enrolled in at least 4 credits can complete the DU Summer Aid Application, typically in March to receive aid for the summer semester. Aid is typically offered in the form of loans. If you intend to use scholarship (see below), regardless of credit load, you must complete the DU Summer Aid Application.
The only summer-specific scholarship opportunity is the Public Interest Stipend, which Dean Freeman solicits applications for during the spring semester.
Students with full tuition scholarships will automatically receive their scholarship if they’ve completed a DU Summer Aid application and have registered for at least 1 credit. Scholarships will be posted prior to tuition statements being generated on May 1st, and weekly thereafter for those registering or changing enrollment after May 1st.
Students without full tuition awards may utilize a portion of their award if they will not attend spring of the following year (e.g., spring 2025 scholarship funds can be pulled into summer 2024). Adjustments must be within one fiscal year. In other words, you cannot pull 3L spring scholarship funds into 1L summer based on anticipated early graduation. Please contact the Office of Student Financial Management via email with your request at Law-FinancialManagement@du.edu.
Summer tuition is the assessed at the same rate as spring, currently $1,982 per credit, with prorated fees totaling about $50 if you waive the Health and Counseling Fee.
No. Any credit is charged the normal tuition rate regardless of location or modality. It’s also important to note that you must attend a mandatory one credit seminar during your first externship or field placement, and this seminar credit is billed at the regular tuition rate as well.
