Wait List Policies & Information

The Sturm College of Law (SCOL) is implementing an automatic wait list policy starting the summer 2015 and fall 2015 registration periods. This policy is consistent with the wait list policy employed at the University Registrar’s Office.

Policy:

If a course is closed at the time of registration, students can automatically place themselves on the wait list for the desired course. Students may wait list for up to three courses at a time. Each course’s wait lists are ranked in the order students place themselves on the wait list. When a spot in a course opens, the first student on the wait list receives an email notifying them of the open spot. The student has 24 hours to add him/herself to the course. Failure to act within 24 hours will result in being dropped from the wait list, and then the next student on the wait list will be notified of the open spot.

Please note that you must be registered for any course you wish to attend. For this reason, wait listed students are not allowed to attend classes. Due to space limitations and equity in the management of our wait listed students, the College of Law does not accept retroactive registrations (aka “forced registrations”).

How the policy has changed from previous years at the SCOL:

In previous years, students received an email from the Law Registrar’s Office stating that a spot was open in a course and that the student had been moved from the wait list into the class. Our new policy, in alignment with University policy, requires student action to enroll themselves from the wait list into the course within 24 hours of an opening.

Tips:

  • Check your law school email address daily (even during the summer).
  • If you plan to take a credit overload (more than 12 credits as a part time student, more than 15 credits as a full time student), make sure you obtain an approved credit overload petition before the registration period begins.
  • Check your MyDU account for registration holds. Holds will prevent you from registering, and the Law Registrar’s Office is unable to lift holds.
