Welcome to the American Indian Law Website! Located in the heart of Indian Country, the University of Denver Sturm College of Law provides Indian law courses, faculty experts, opportunities for practical experience and community involvement, and a vibrant Native American Law Students Association. Our offerings in American Indian Law will certainly interest students who intend to practice in the field, and we take seriously our obligation to train students for careers in Indian law. DU alumni are working as attorneys for their own tribes, litigators at advocacy organizations such as the Native American Rights Fund, and associates at private law firms with tribal clients. Today, however, a foundation in American Indian Law is important for any student planning to practice law, especially in the West. Whether it’s the sovereign immunity of a tribal corporation, the Indian reserved water rights doctrine, or custody proceedings under the Indian Child Welfare Act, many attorneys encounter Indian law problems, even if they do not represent tribes! States including New Mexico, South Dakota, and Washington now test American Indian Law on their bar exams, reflecting its importance for all attorneys. As many of our alumni report, a background in Indian law turns out to be a valuable skill-set for any legal practice. And studying Indian law gives students a chance to reflect on broader issues of sovereignty, jurisdiction, pluralism, cross-cultural lawyering, social justice, human rights, and legal history. We invite you to check out the various sections of this website, to learn about our American Indian Law courses, faculty, students, events, community, and career opportunities. |
