Eligibility

All law students, including 1L and transfer students, may write-on to the Water Law Review.

The University of Denver is one of the few schools that allow 1L students to participate on law journals. We welcome and encourage all students to write-on, and believe that participation on the Water Law Review will give students an advantage in classes, internships, and future employment. More specifically, participation on the journal will help students increase their familiarity and understanding of the The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, and will sharpen their legal writing and research skills.

Write-On Competition

The Water Law Review conducts a write-on competition in both the fall and spring semester. A majority of our staff members are selected from the fall write-on competition; however, we do accept candidates that exhibit exceptional skills in legal writing and analysis in the spring.

The write-on completion involves three components:

  1. A cite and source exercise designed to test a candidate’s understanding and application of the The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (19th ed. 2010);
  2. A proofreading exercise designed to test a candidate’s editing skills and understanding of the Chicago Manual of Style (16th ed. 2010);
  3. A case summary designed to test a candidate’s writing ability.

The competition is administered through the Water Law Review’s Candidacy TWEN website. On TWEN, students can find detailed instructions and all materials necessary to complete the entry. The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (19th ed. 2010) is available on reserve in the Westminster Library. The Chicago Manual of Style (16th ed. 2010) is also available on reserve in the library, or online through the Penrose Library at http://0-www.chicagomanualofstyle.org.bianca.penlib.du.edu/home.html.
