General Information
Each year the Clinic trains approximately 10 students to practice environmental law. The goal of the Environmental Law Clinic is to protect the environment while teaching students practical legal skills that will translate into any practice area.
Benefits
Specific benefits to students include:
- The honing of research and written advocacy skills through the writing of complaints, pleadings, motions, petitions, and comment letters;
- Development of oral advocacy skills through oral argument on motions and participation in settlement and pretrial conferences, presentations to community groups, participation in negotiations/mediations, etc;
- Experience in litigation planning, including the investigation of facts and the development of the cases;
- Development of effective planning and organizational habits, including the ability to manage the multiple priorities that exist in environmental cases; and finally
- The chance to work to protect the environment.
Projects
Clinic projects are provided by local community groups as well as state, regional, and national organizations in need of legal representation and advice on environmental issues. In the past, student projects have included drafting petitions to list species as endangered and drafting pleadings for litigation proceedings. Projects are developed by the clinic staff in collaboration with clients. Every effort is made to match student preferences with available projects.
Structure
The clinic is a year-long, two-semester commitment for twelve credits (six in-class credits, six out-of-class credits). The clinic meets weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:45 AM for presentations and discussions on environmental law practice, lawyering skills, and docket review. Students are expected to meet regularly with their supervising attorney to discuss specifics of case progress and strategies.
