Writing Competition Deadline: Nat’l Sea Grant Law Center Pub. & Res. Opps. in Ocean & Coastal Law

May 01, 2009

National Sea Grant Law Center Publication and Research Opportunities in Ocean and Coastal Law
Web Site »
More Information (PDF) »
Topic: Sea Grant is very similar to the land grant college system. NOAA has designated 30 universities to receive federal funding to conduct ocean- and coastal-related research, education, and outreach. The Sea Grant Law Center is an initiative of the Sea Grant College Program that conducts research on ocean and coastal law issues and disseminates non-biased legal information to the Sea Grant network and its constituents – fishermen, resource managers, policy makers, etc. Issues include public access, fisheries, offshore aquaculture, and aquatic invasive species.

The Law Center offers law students from across the country the opportunity to write articles for publication in the Law Center’s legal reporters. The Law Center publishes two quarterly newsletters. Each newsletter features case summaries of recent court decisions in ocean and coastal law (CZMA, ESA, fisheries, etc.). Most articles are 2-3 pages long and written for a non-legal audience. The time commitment is approximately 10 hours per article. Law students may also have the opportunity to work with Law Center staff on research projects and law review articles.

The Law Center has worked with law students as far away as the University of Hawaii. Opportunities are volunteer, but the positions provide great opportunities to get involved in developing issues. If you are interested, please send a cover letter, resume, and short (no more than three pages) writing sample by email.
