Externship Registration
If you are interested in earning academic credit for an externship through the Legal Externship Program for the Fall 2011 semester, please read this email carefully as it contains important information and deadlines. Please note that all first-time externs are required to attend a mandatory orientation, which will take place on August 12, 2011. If you are unable to attend the Orientation you will not be able to do and externship during the Fall 2011 semester. (If you have already completed an externship through the Legal Externship Program, you do not need to attend orientation.)
You must have completed at least 30 credit hours before you can do an externship for academic credit. You must have completed at least 60 credit hours before you are eligible for certification under the Student Practice Act.
For the Fall 2011 semester, ALL of the following steps must be completed on or before August 3, 2011.
- Step One: Secure a legal externship
- Step Two: If your Supervising Attorney has not been approved, your supervisor must submit an application. Your Supervising Attorney must be an attorney who has practiced law for a minimum of five years. The only exception to this is for MRLS externships.
- Step Three: Your supervisor must submit the Supervising Attorney Acceptance Form
- Step Four: Complete the Externship Registration Form. You can only complete this form after Steps 1-3 are complete and the Legal Externship Program e-mails you a link.
Please note: If Step 1-4 are not completed by the August 3 deadline, you will be unable to complete an externship for credit this Fall.
Below is a list of additional registration procedures:
- Please read the Externship Handbook as you will be responsible for all requirements. The Externship Handbook is located at http://www.law.du.edu/documents/legal-externship-program/ExternshipHandbook.pdf. If you still have questions regarding the process or requirements, please let us know.
- If you would like to do an out-of-state or out-of-country externship, you must meet with and receive approval from Professor Vessels, the Externship Director, prior to the start of your externship. To schedule a meeting with Professor Vessels, please email Charlotte Collinsworth at ccollinsworth@law.du.edu.
- If you would like to do your externship for either 5 or 6 credits, you must meet with and receive approval from either Professor Vessels or Professor Webb. To schedule a meeting with the Externship Faculty, please email Charlotte Collinsworth at ccollinsworth@law.du.edu.
Paperwork deadlines are firm. Please check the Externship Timeline for Prospective Externs, the Externship Handbook, and the Course Requirements on the Externship website for all requirements and their respective deadlines. The Course Requirements (your syllabus) will be sent to you before the start of classes in August.
