LRAP
The Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP)
Mission
The Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) Committee at the Sturm College of Law is committed to fulfilling the greater legal community’s ethical obligation to provide legal assistance to those with limited access to the legal system by encouraging graduating law students and recent alumni to seek and maintain public interest employment. Towards that end, LRAP at the Sturm College of Law promotes and encourages committed students to accept lower-paying public interest jobs by providing forgivable loans to repay those students’ law school related debt. LRAP recipients are chosen in compliance with the DU’s Policy of Non-discrimination.
Overview
The University of Denver Sturm College of Law’s Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) provides financial support to alumni pursuing public interest careers. For many graduates, debt loads constrain career choices. DU’s LRAP program was created to provide graduates with the financial support necessary to accept lower-paying, public interest employment. The Office of Financial Management administers the program, which was started in 2004, with a grant from Chancellor Dan Ritchie.
Eligibility
A graduate (or expected graduate) must work for or have been offered a position with a qualifying non-profit or government agency that substantially utilizes the legal training and skills of the graduate.
An LRAP award is determined by the person’s total law school debt, income, personal financial circumstances, and commitment to public interest work.
Loan forgiveness is dependent upon the recipient’s demonstration that all employment, income, and payment requirements have been met.
