Event Description

Redistricting and the Voting Rights Act

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Location: 125

Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act requires that proposed changes in voting procedures cannot take effect until they receive approval by the DOJ or D.C. Circuit Court in an effort to ensure that such changes do not have the purpose or effect of discriminating on the basis of race or native language.

Come hear Martha Tierney of Heizer Paul Grueskin, LLP discuss the 1965 Voting Rights Act (VRA) and the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Perry v. Perez and its implications for future voting rights cases. Ms. Tierney will further discuss her involvement with VRA litigation in Georgia as well as local issues arising from the Voter Rights Act in Colorado.
