Denver Law to host Rocky Mountain Regional rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot

Beginning February 9, 2012, and for the second year in a row, the University of Denver Sturm College of Law will host the Rocky Mountain Super Regional Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot. 24 teams from the western and mid-western regions of the country will arrive in Denver on February 9th to begin competing for a prized spot in the International Rounds which will take place this March, and which will bring in teams from around the globe.
The Jessup Competition is an advocacy contest in which teams of students write briefs and present oral arguments before a simulated International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. The competition starts in September with the release of a fact pattern describing a fictional legal dispute between two countries, and culminates with the world championship White and Case International Rounds, where teams from all corners of the globe come together for a week of competition and cultural events.
Written by a committee of leading scholars, the Jessup Problem is designed to address important and timely issues in international law. The Jessup Competition is the world’s largest moot court competition, with participants from more than 500 law schools in over 80 countries. The U.S. Regionals are branded as the most competitive qualifying competitions of any moot court contest. Each region has 22-24 schools competing, but only two will advance to the world championship.
Hosting the regional rounds of the competition is a natural fit for Denver Law which has been sending teams to compete in this prestigious event since 1965. On numerous occasions the Denver Law team has won regional competitions and placed high in the world. In 2008, the team placed second in the world for the Memorials (written briefs).
Participants say the Jessup International Law Moot is an experience they will never forget and that membership on the team prepares them for almost anything they might face in their future practice of international law.
